Vechain was established in 2015 through an Ethereum Initial Coin Offering, and currently exists on its own native blockchain. The project aims to leverage the powers of blockchain technology to strengthen business supply chains in the real world. The foundation's Toolchain platform allows businesses to monitor the flow of goods along their supply chains; all logged on a public blockchain. For example, a patron at a Sydney bar can track their bottle of champagne straight back to the champagne region in France, knowing that it is authentic.
The system is accompanied by a dual token ecosystem comprised of the VeChain Token or VET and VeChain Thor or VTHO. VET operates as a store of value for its network's users, and VTHO is used to pay for transactions and execute smart contracts. VTHO is the reward given for staking VET, which has a maximum supply of slightly less than 87 billion tokens.
