Solana, Ticker code SOL, was established in 2017 by current CEO Anatoly Yakovenko, a former engineer with chipmaker Qualcomm. Solana combines Proof of Work with an innovative Proof of History validation mechanism to achieve an impressive 50,000 transactions per second. In doing so, Solana also has extremely low transaction costs at around $10 for every 1 million transactions. Transactions are completed in the protocol’s native currency SOL which can be staked by validators.
Further, Solana also supports decentralized applications and marketplaces using smart contract functionality to challenge platforms such as Ethereum and Cardano. The Solana ecosystem already hosts a variety of projects covering De-Fi, NFT’s, enterprise services and more. Since its inception, the project has partnered with derivatives platform FTX, who provides a decentralized exchange on Solana called Serum, and other projects such as Chainlink, Terra, Audius and USDC.
