Polkadot, ticker code DOT, was launched in 2016 by Ethereum Cofounder Gavin Wood, who was the lead creator of Ethereum’s code language Solidity. Gavin Wood Founded Polkadot with the intention of creating the next generation Ethereum. The new project, Polkadot, places a heightened focus on interoperability which is the ability of computer systems to share information. Hence all blockchains on its Network, known as Parachains, are connected to a central relay chain where information can be shared from.
Further information can also be gathered externally from preexisting protocols such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, allowing “cross-network functionality and communication.” The native Currency on Polkadot, called DOT, can be used for network governance, staked, and connecting Parachain’s to the Network. DOT does not have a maximum supply but instead a predetermined annual inflation rate that is determine through ssystem governance.
