Neo launched in February 2014 as China's first open-source blockchain, which aims to compete with Ethereum and other projects. Neo has developed a platform to facilitate the construction of digital assets, contracts, and payments, which accepts an array of programming languages. They aim to lower the barriers to entry for developers and facilitate faster and more secure transactions. The Neo blockchain has two native tokens known as NEO and GAS.
NEO serves as an investment and gives investors voting rights on blockchain improvements. GAS is used to facilitate transactions by paying for fees on the network. Their smart contract platform uses a Delegated Byzantine Fault Tolerant (dBFT) consensus algorithm that can build blocks in 15 to 20 seconds. A key feature that helps with security and decentralisation is the Neo ID tool which enables on-chain authentication that lets users verify credentials without sharing private data.
