Hedera Hashgraph was founded by Leemon Baird and his business partner Mance Harmon through their software company, Swirlds. Initially released in 2016 Hedera Hashgraph was comprised of a governing council of major international corporations such as Boeing, IBM, Google and eftpos. Hashgraph is a decentralized publicly distributed ledger but does not use blockchain technology. Instead, the platform combines asynchronous Byzantine Fault Tolerance, directed acyclic graphs and network gossiping to create a unique proof-of stake network.
In essence the project aims to provide a smart contract platform without the traditional limitations of blockchain technology. This network operates a variety of decentralized applications which can process over 10,000 Transactions per second at a fraction of a cent. The native currency to Hedera Hashgraph is HBAR which is used for staking, transaction fee’s and has a maximum supply of 50 billion tokens.
