After the failure of the Ethereum network to sustain the network activity generated by the Cryptokitties launch in 2017, Dapper labs decided to create their own blockchain, Flow. Dapper Labs’ goal was to create a network that could facilitate the creation of dApps and businesses. Flow employs a multi-node blockchain architecture to scale their blockchain. This multi-node technology allows the Flow ecosystem to boast a fast, decentralised, and developer-friendly blockchain with the at the forefront of the next generation of web3 games, apps, and digital assets. Smart contracts on the Flow blockchain can be rewritten using the native Cadence programming language.
This new programming language allows the smart contracts on the Flow ecosystem to rewrite the Ethereum virtual machine contracts with ease and assemble them as part of the Flow ecosystem. In 2020 Dapper Labs launched the Flow playground, which provided developers with the ability to design Non-fungible tokens (NFTs), at the time, NFTs were relatively unknown but this placed the Flow ecosystem in a good position to dominate the NFT boom which followed in 2021. In July 2021, the NBA announced they would be partnering with Flow to launch their NBA top shot NFTs, which was a huge success and brought widespread attention to the potential of the Flow ecosystem.
