Fantom went live in 2019, established by South Korean Computer Scientist Ahn Byung Ik. Fantom leverages the power of the Ethereum Virtual Machine, smart contracts, and decentralised applications, or Dapps, by providing a platform for building and using Dapps. Fantom does this using a DAG consensus mechanism combined with its custom mechanism ONLAY to achieve thousands of transactions per second with low fees. The native currency of the Fantom network is the FTM token which has a maximum supply of 3.175 billion tokens.
FTM is used for staking, governance, network fees and collateral on Fantom Finance. Staking rewards are paid out to Validators and Delegators staking FMT as a reward for securing the Fantom network. In its short existence Fantom has been supported by popular crypto wallet Ledger and partnered with the Graph. However, it has not yet been listed on major exchanges such as Coinbase which could potentially unlock a large investor base.
