Elrond was founded in 2017 Benjamin Mincu and launched its Mainnet in 2020. Elrond is a decentralised blockchain protocol with Dapp and smart contract compatibility touting itself as the “new internet economy”. The protocol achieves greater speed, interoperability, and security than traditional Decentralised Finance or De-Fi projects through its Adaptive State Sharding, Secure Proof of Sake consensus mechanism and Elrond Virtual Machine. Together these allow Elrond to process 5,000 transactions per second per shard, making it highly scalable allowing the efficient operating decentralised applications on its network.
The native currency to Elrond is the EGLD token which acts as both a unit of account and medium of exchange on the network. The token is used for Governance, Staking, Transaction Fee’s, Smart contracts and rewarding validators and has a maximum supply of 31.4 million tokens with only a portion of which currently in circulation.
