Near Protocol was established in 2018 by Illia Polosukhin and Alexander Skidanov. Near Protocol is a smart contract platform for operating decentralized applications and is in direct competition with the likes of Solana and Ethereum. At inception the project raised $50 million across two private funding rounds and has experienced extraordinary growth since. Features such as the cross network Rainbow Bridge, Nightshade Sharding, smart contract compatibility and NFT functionality together create a well-rounded smart contract platform. The native token of the Near protocol is the NEAR token which has a maximum supply of 1 billion tokens.
This token is used to pay for transactions conducted on the network, governance, staking and more. The project has received backing from notable institutions such as coinbase ventures and has had many De-Fi, metaverse, data storage solutions and NFT ecosystems built within it. Moving forward Near wishes to implement privacy features, introduce private shards and expand the Rainbow Bridge.
