Helium (HNT) is a decentralized blockchain powered network for the Internet of Things (IoT), with its main purpose being the incentivization of decentralized and physical wireless networks. It was founded in 2013 and launched under the company Helium Inc. and was the first global peer-to-peer wireless network with the capacity to connect different devices from the IoT. These wireless networks consist of nodes also known as Hotspots, which are run by node operators who are HNT holders.
Through managing nodes and hosting these ‘Hotspots”, users are incentivised to participate in the network’s functionality. Helium’s runs on a consensus mechanism known as ‘Proof of Coverage’ which is responsible for distributing rewards to node operators and HNT holders. HNT operates on a Burn-and-Mint Equilibrium token model in which tokens are burned to generate Data Credits and this is balanced against newly mined HNT. The maximum supply of HNT is 223 million tokens.
