Uniswap is the pioneering decentralised exchange (DeX) running on the Ethereum Virtual machine, which allows users to swap, earn and build using their crypto trading platform. Uniswap was initially theorised in 2016 by a founding member of Ethereum, Vitalik Buterin, who envisioned a protocol that could facilitate on-chain transactions through a decentralised, automated market maker. A year later, Hayden Adams put Buterin's theory to practice by creating the Uniswap protocol and launched the project in November 2018.
Rather than the traditional finance method of maintaining an order book where buyers and sellers can transact through placing orders, Uniswap uses their AMM protocol employing a collection of liquidity pools to provide a decentralised service for their users. The protocol quickly gained traction by employing decentralised liquidity providers such as Curve DAO and Balancer to contribute the liquidity necessary to allow Uniswap to facilitate decentralised transactions.
