Bitcoin, Ticker Code BTC, is the largest cryptocurrency by market capitalisation and is synonymous with the entire market itself. Created in 2009 by an unknown individual under the alias ‘Satoshi Nakamoto,’ Bitcoin is a decentralised currency using a peer-to-peer network to facilitate transactions using blockchain technology. Bitcoin uses a strictly Proof of Work system whereby nodes on the network approve transactions and add blocks to the Blockchain by solving complex mathematical problems.
This process is known as mining. Rewards for Mining are distributed to nodes based on the level computational power they contribute to the network. Bitcoin has a limited supply of 21 million coins, with only a portion of that currently in circulation. Mining on the Bitcoin network is expected to continue for more than 100 years until all 21 million coins are mined. Bitcoin’s success can be partially attributed to its first mover advantage, popularising cryptocurrency and being the first advocate of a decentralised financial system.
